Austin Energy issues me Rebate Check #1

I thought that the group would like to know that I’ve been issued the first Austin Energy Electric Vehicles Rebate Program check for an EV conversion: File # EC0001 for $250.  This is proof positive of their deep conviction in supporting grid vehicles and alternative energy.   The money is great, but the sentiment is even better!  I love Austin!

I’ve scanned the letter and check for you ogle.  Many thanks to the AustinEV group for helping make this available to conversions!

Texas Inspection: PASS!

I took the RAVolt for it’s annual physical this morning at the Rollingwood Chevron. After a brief, “how do I drive this thing” phone call, the inspectors were able to complete the safety inspection. They called DPS to get the codes to bypass the emissions & gas cap requirements.

I know the RAVolt was glad to skip “the turn your head and cough” part of the exam which must be very embarrassing for cars (especially those wannabe macho Hummers).  The inspector said that it was the first EV they’d ever tested and they’d assumed that it was some science project for UT.

My Insurance: Do they care if it’s electric?

I just told my American National insurance agent that my car is electric. When I removed the ICE, I’d told him that I was replacing it (true) and omitted that the new model was CO2 free.

He did not immediately say “what!!!” and I’m taking that as a good sign. It would suck if they won’t insure the RAVolt because I’d have to drop them for all of our policies and find a new insurer. After the government and mortgage company, they get more of our $ than any other company.

Show me the money! Austin Energy offers $250 rebates for converted EVs

As of May 23, 2007, any Austin Energy customer who has purchased a newly converted electric vehicle or who has completed a conversion themselves may apply to receive up to a $250.00 rebate from Austin Energy. This groundbreaking move matches the efforts that Central Texas Clean Cities and Austin Energy have made in supporting production, neighborhood and low speed electric vehicles, scooters and bicycles.

All Legal!

I’ve got my Texas plates.  I’m ready to give the ICE RAV a last spin before engine out day.  I’m planning to remove the CO2 generator the second week in January.  I’ll schedule an official open garage shortly.

Documentation Important

I was reading on the TX-DOT site that it is critical to keep a receipts and a log of all the parts that go into the conversion.  They need this as part of the “custom car” registration.  They also want to make sure that none of the parts are stolen.  Imagine - hot batteries.

Legalities: registration, inspection, etc

Before I actually take the ICE out of a working car, I’d like some idea on what legal hurdles await me.  Here are some of my questions:

  • How will I get my inspection sticker?  Is there a special station that handles EVs?
  • Does the EV status of my car change it’s registration process or requirement?
  • Does my insurance company care about the EV?  Do I need a special document?
  • Can I get a tax break?  If so, where do I sign up for that?

I’ll post the answers as I get them.
