Battery Placement - how low can you go?

I finally had time to play with my battery mock-up. The mock-up is the size of an actual J150 battery so I can make sure they will fit into the places I want to put them. I need to locate 12 of them.

Soon I’ll have dimensions and drawings, but I’m eyeballing it for now. My eyeballs tell me that I have room for 5 to 6 batteries in the front. For fit across the main engine area and two would go where in radiator cavity.  If I can’t fit all 6 in the engine compartment, I could put one or two in the axle well as originally planned.  Now that I can really see it, the well is not as good a location as I had hoped.

The other 6 J150s can mount under the rear chassis. Two can easily fit in the gas tank cavity (clearance fine: down to rear suspension) and four can fit where the muffler was. The muffler box clearance may be as low as 6 inches.  I’m not sure if that is so low that it causes a problem.   One advantage, the back area suspension is designed for cargo and may be well equipped for the extra net weight (full gas tank -130 lbs, muffler -20 lbs, 6 J50 +480 = +330).

The next question is: what is an acceptable minimum clearance?
